Letter from Audrey Mansfield our Village Agent. Audrey does tremendous work in the Parish, please contact her if you think she can assist you. Contact information at end of letter.

I recently became a Dementia Friend which I have found very useful as I have a number of clients who have a family member with Dementia.

About two thirds of older people will get dementia in later life although it can affect younger people as well.  There are a number of different forms, with Alzheimer’s being the most common.  It usually starts by affecting people’s short term memory, but can also affect perception, so for example people may not recognise themselves in the mirror.

You can imagine the brain as a not very well made bookcase with your memories stored in a set of encyclopaedias, stacked from the bottom shelf upwards.  Every new memory goes into a book which is then placed on a high shelf.  If something shakes this wonky bookcase the volumes on the top shelf fall off, they are the most recent memories of today, this week, last month, all gone.  Lower down the books are still safely on the shelf and you can remember 10 or 20 years ago, or the French you learnt at school.

You keep feelings and opinions in a separate book, which isn’t stored on the bookshelf.  So you will know how you feel: happy, sad, hungry, don’t like chocolate, without remembering why you feel that way.

You can join me in becoming a Dementia Friend – the Alzheimer’s Society runs short courses.

If you are concerned about someone, the Alzheimer’s Society can help.  The national helpline is 0330 333 0804.  The website is

CAN YOU HELP? there is no longer a direct bus service from Monkton Heathfield to the Crown Medical, so help is URGENTLY needed.

Volunteer drivers needed to
provide lifeline service

Somerset County Council is appealing for more volunteer drivers to help provide a vital lifeline for vulnerable adults and children.

The County Council currently provides transport for eligible non-emergency NHS patients and social care users, ranging from the elderly to young children. This includes trips to hospital for medical appointments, or transport to day centres.

A dedicated army of nearly 200 fantastic drivers across the county currently act as volunteers, but the ageing population in Somerset means demand for transport is growing and more volunteers are needed.

Volunteer driving is a rewarding opportunity to get out and about, helping others and meeting new people, while providing a vital lifeline in your local community.

Anyone can be a volunteer – the only criteria is that drivers must be over 18, have use of their own four-door vehicle, and hold a full UK driving licence with no more than six points. Mileage expenses will be reimbursed at up to 50p per mile.

To find out more about volunteer driving, please contact Somerset You Can Do by phoning 01278 664180 or visit

Parish Noticeboards

Residents are very welcome to advertise Parish events or services on our Parish Council noticeboards at The Street, Greenway, the Village Hall, the Stores on School Road, Farriers Green, St Quintins Park, Brittons Ash Green and Canal View. This is why our Parish Notice boards are not boxed in.  Please respect this facility; do not post anything that is not an event or a service; and please remove your advertisement after the event has passed. Please do not use a staple gun, it may be easy for the notice poster but its very difficult for subsequent users!

Do you have a couple of hours a month, and want to help to keep the Parish looking clean and tidy and a pleasant place to live? Then please phone the Clerk, Tricia Cavill, on 01823 413 524.  The Parish Council would be delighted to hear from you!
